For Open Instrumentation and Electronics | ~5’ | 2013. rev. 2015

Program Notes: Light Heartache was originally written as a stand alone piece for a final project in an electronic music class I took in 2013 with Glenn Hackbarth at Arizona State. in 2015 Ruthie Wenger and I had been collaborating on a new work for a new Sonata for Cello and Piano, as well as an exchange between NYC and Phoenix with my friends and colleagues at NYU during my masters. We were looking for a way to add about 5 minutes to a concert with little or not rehearsal time. I asked how much improvisation experience she had, and the response was little. This really was the beginning of me asking performers to explore improvisation. The original impetus of Light Hearbreak was the explore Light, and the idea that we don’t always have much control over other people. By 2015, I don’t think the name means much, nor that pragmatic. Today, I keep the title for no reason other than I see no reason to change it. The real goal here is to explore new and unfamiliar territory.
