Gothenburg Improvs
From November 23rd to December 10th 2021, I spent approximately 30 minutes a day improvising and producing something to share as a compositional exercise. Some of these are much better than others, but the rules were I could only spend 30 minutes per day, improvising, editing, and producing. The end results are as follows. I also will say this exercise was EXTREMELY beneficial to my composition process. So much so, I wrote 10 minutes of music outside of this project for my dissertation during this time. Some of them are better than others, some of them I was tired, some of them I’m in love with and want to do more with. The Gothenburg Improvs were all composed at my Partners apartment on Möldalsvägen in Gothenburg, Sweden where he moved for a post-doc in August 2021. His area of research is Car Free Urbanism and Sustainable Transportation. Day 3 is about Gas Prices and on Day 8 the video is on a train so yes that influenced this project. I highly recommend everyone consider building improvisation into their practice as it made the world a difference in my compositional output! If you like this project and would like to see me do other challenges like it, let me know!
